I Did A VERY Bad Thing...

As you can see from the title, I did a very bad thing. I flipped to the end of the book I'm reading and read the end. The terrible thing? The main character dies! Oh my gosh!!! I'm still going through all the stages of grief at the moment.

I post this because I wanted to open up a discussion. Is it okay for readers to flip to the end, or should we wait?

For me, I get too anxious and can't take the suspense any longer.

Also, what should I do now: Should I keep reading, even though I know the end, or should I give the book (and author) the credit they deserve and finish reading?

Let me know your opinions in a comment.

  1. I usually do that if I'm not liking the book and just have to see if I need to keep reading (as in, does *anything* happen?) Then, I either like what I saw and keep reading, or I figure I know enough and put the book aside. In your case though, I would keep reading.... I would HAVE to know what happened to lead to that kind of ending!

  2. I have definitely done this before. I am not sure if it is okay... because it kind of defeats the purpose of the book, but sometimes it just has to be done!

  3. I usually freak out if i know any spoilers, and I usually only resort to checking out the ending if I'm dying trying to figure out what's going on and the book is really long/slow. But if I were you, I'd keep reading to find out how that ending happens.

  4. If you like the character/plot/writing, definitely keep reading to see how the death occurs. It may help with your grief.

In general, I try not to read the end beforehand but I do remember one specific instance when I did:
For a romantic historical fiction that I knew would be DNF-to see who the heroine picked. IMO, she picked wrong. It only confirmed my decision not to finish the book. If I liked her choice, I would have tried harder.

  5. I never read ahead if I like a book. I like the suspense of not knowing. If I'm on the border of hating the book I'll flip to the end to see if I should continue to read.

Shows are a completely different story. I want to know what's going to happen before it happens.

  7. I've done that before, either when the book is boring and I'm debating whether to finish it, or if it's good and I'm just anxious, lol!

I vote keep reading, it sounds as if you're attached to the character, so you'll probably enjoy the book anyways!

  8. There are no "laws" about book reading (well, not that I know of.) So, do what you want. As for finishing the book, I guess it depends on if you were entertained by the writing and the story? Or is the book just ruined now?

If I hate the writing and just want to know what happens, sometimes I'll just look it up on the web and not finish the book to satisfy my curiosity.

  9. I have done this a couple of times when I just hate the book and have to see what happens. I don't like to do it though. Usually I don't finish the book when I do this.

Okay...the reason I am here is to give you the Stylish Blogger Award. Your blog rocks!

  10. I used to flip to the back sometimes when I was younger but I'm pretty satisfied to wait until I get to the end but I'm also a fast reader.

If it were me, I'd still read the book. There is a lot more to the work than simply the ending.
